I walk the slab first, the way you'd look over a tractor before taking it to the field. I'm finding the cracks and joints we'll need to carry through the new floor. A joint made to move will show up in the new surface if we just cover it over, and shrinkage cracks can show through too. Planning for that up front beats chasing it later.
Color is the other thing we talk through. If how the floor looks matters to you, we plan a top coat into the job from the start, because sunlight changes this floor's color. It's simpler to put the top coat on during the same closure than to shut the room again later. If color doesn't matter much to you, we can talk about leaving it off.
This isn't the right floor for every room, and I'll tell you when it isn't. If your space stays dry and you want the look of the concrete itself, polished concrete flooring grinds and shines the slab you already have. Stained concrete flooring puts color into the concrete without a thick layer on top. Urethane cement earns its place where water, heat and cleaners hit the floor every day.
